This week's feature album comes from cinematic funk quartet Karate Boogaloo with the latest instalment of the KB Mixtape series Mixtape No. 3 – Songs From Film & Television.

The KB's Mixtapes series, which are self-produced collections of the band's interpretations of hip hop samples, have become cult classics. Since KB's Mixtape No.1 was released independently in 2018, crusty funk reimaginings of deep tunes from the world of hip hop subversively found their way onto turntables around the world.

On Mixtape No.3, Karate Boogaloo reinterpret and reengineer themes from film and television that were used as sample material in hip hop, diving deep into a plethora of sources and flipping them in their wonky, left-field instro-soul style.

Track 'Bumpy's Lament' was originally released on Isaac Hayes' iconic 1971 Blaxploitation soundtrack Shaft, and later sampled by Dr Dre in 'Xplosive' and Erykah Badu’s 'Bag Lady'. 40 years after Shaft, Karate Booglaoo push the tune through their wonky instrumental soul lens to create a left-field mid-tempo funk burner.

Mixtape No. 3 – Songs From Film & Television is out now via College of Knowledge Records. PBS members can tune in all week for a chance to win a copy of the album. Not a member? Join now!
