This week's PBS Feature Album is Flight, the sixth album by Naarm instrumental combo The Seven Ups. The six piece band exists in the space between groove and atmosphere. Their latest material leans into repetition and texture, unfolding as slow-burn instrumentals that move from widescreen mood to heavy, synth-led momentum.
Recorded at Soundpark Studios in Naarm/Melbourne, Flight explores two contrasting sides of the band’s sound. At one end are driving, synth-heavy tracks built around propulsive rhythms, warped analogue sounds and heavy grooves. At the other, the record opens out into something more spacious and dreamlike, with melodic guitar, hazy textures and cinematic passages that unfold at a slower pace.
Across its 11 tracks, Flight moves back and forth between these two worlds, capturing a band six albums deep continuing to reshape its sound without losing the rhythmic core that has defined The Seven Ups from the beginning.
Tune in all this week to hear tracks from Flight. PBS Members have the chance to win a copy of the album on vinyl - simply email your name and membership number to before midnight Sunday October 18.
