This week’s PBS Feature Album is Found Sound, the new release from Scottish/Kiwi producer Pugilist.
After a decade of consistent output on celebrated record labels such as Nous'klaer Audio, Modern Hypnosis, Samurai Records and Banoffee Pies Records, Pugilist's highly anticipated long-play album is out now on his own imprint Ruff Kutz.
With his new album, this prolific and acclaimed artist draws inspiration from various musical traditions to produce a 12-track work rooted in 'bass music' and centred around some cheeky sampling in the spirit of the underground. Best described as a collage of sounds that Pugilist has steadily collected over the past ten years, the album is a tribute to downtempo, house, hip hop, trip hop and dub, held together by a washy dub-wise feel and intoxicating atmospherics. Sculpted by contemporary production techniques and a tasteful use of effects, the album’s sound remains raw and organic.
Pugilist is a frequent creative collaborator with such local artists as Tamen and POD, and a sought-after selector in Australia, Europe and beyond. Don't miss the launch of Found Sound at Howler on March 28 before he heads off on a European tour in May and June.
Tune in all this week to hear tracks from Found Sound. PBS Members have the chance to win a vinyl copy of the album - simply email your name and membership number to before midnight Sunday March 29.
