This week’s PBS Feature Album is Beanpole, the long-awaited debut from evocative singer/songwriter Georgia Knight.
The new album, which has been in Georgia’s back pocket since it was first recorded in 2023, signals a sonic reimagining for the artist that edges away from her folk foundations and steps deeper into a world of darker terrain and cinematic breadth. Recorded with Andrew ‘Idge’ Hehir at Soundpark Studios, album tracks on Beanpole were largely composed by Georgia on autoharp, and later brought to life in the studio with Idge, Nick Finch (Cash Savage and the Last Drinks), Holly Thomas (Quivers), Rosie Noyes, Dan Luscombe, Joe Orton, Jethro Pickett, and more. The result is a collection of songs that toy with dark pop and the avant-garde, and venture through worlds of trip-hop, loops and synth-washed layers.
Georgia’s new musical chapter was previewed earlier this year by way of the trip-hop-laced icebreaker, ‘Desire’, and later followed up with the moody dark-pop track ‘Mingle’, which quickly captured the attention of a global audience. She showcased at BIGSOUND, winning over plenty of new fans, and quickly word spread. What followed was a succession of coveted live bookings, radio play across North America and the UK, and plenty of intrigue for an artist seemingly impossible to pin down or to place.
Beanpole marks Georgia’s first release since her 2023 Hell on Bent Street EP, which saw her perform at Rising, Dark Mofo and Camp A Low Hum, as well as support Blonde Redhead, Mogwai, Angie McMahon and Maple Glider. Since, Georgia has been announced to perform at Phoenix Central Park in November, The Others Way festival in New Zealand, along with a handful of top-tier, unannounced shows.
