This week’s PBS Feature Album is Amu, the debut release from Naarm-based Brazilian jazz musician Alcides Neto.
Amu explores a series of personal stories throughout Alcides life. Written in stages over several years, Amu began to take shape during lockdown and culminated with the final piece in early 2023. Each track carries its own imprint, with each song anchored in a shared source of inspiration. Growing up in the countryside of São Paulo state, Brazil, the landscapes, rhythms and memories quietly guided the music. Across eight carefully curated tracks, each song is designed to fit within the wider themes of Amu, intended to be listened to in full, with Alcides allowing the music to evolve naturally until reaching its final form. For Alcides, music is central to his identity, practicing allows him to stay connected to himself and as a migrant, to his community.
Tune in all this week to hear tracks from Amu. PBS Members have the chance to win a vinyl copy of the album - simply email your name and membership number to before midnight Sunday March 1.
