Pakistani instrumental outfit Jaubi traverse Hindustani ragas and spiritual jazz seemingly at will. Hailing from Lahore, Pakistan, Jaubi are composed of Ali Riaz Baqar (guitar and composer), Zohaib Hassan Khan (sarangi) and Kashif Ali Dhani (tablas and percussion). The looseness of the band’s title also functions as the group’s guiding principle: their mission is to create whatever sounds and feels good.

PBS was lucky to feature two world premiere broadcasts of recordings made at the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF). On Tuesday November 26 Mike Gurrieri broadcasted the very personal suite Tooni from MIJF First Nations artist-in-residence Bumpy. Tooni traces Bumpy’s learnings of language and reflects on her travels on Noongar Boodja, tracing the footsteps of her family and Elders.
