Melbourne International Jazz Festival and The Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture are honoured to present the legendary Charles Lloyd and Maria Farantouri in an ambitious and extraordinary festival event.

Over the past half century, uniquely expressive saxophonist Charles Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most influential and inventive musicians in jazz history. The “voice of resistance” during the Greek military junta of the late 60s, and revered for her soulful delivery of the Theodorakis songbook, Maria Farantouri’s incandescent vocals have been described as “a present from the gods of Olympus” (The Guardian).

The result of a decade-long friendship between the two artists, this groundbreaking project sees jazz artists combining forces with classical Greek musicians to perform works by Lloyd, Theodorakis and the specially-arranged Greek Suite.

Don’t miss this hauntingly beautiful synthesis of sound and sensibilities.
