Fri 10 Oct 2014 to Sat 11 Oct 2014

Join us for a two special broadcasts from the Bain Marie Festival Hub for Stone Love/Jungle Fever, Friday 5-8pm and Soulgroove '66, Saturday 3-5pm.

Join Switched On’s Emma Peel, Jungle Fever’s Matt McFetridge, Go For Broke's Ken Eavel and a bouillabaisse of special guests including Blue Juice’s Mohair Slim, the Californian Soul Man, Jumpin' Josh Collins and Balkan crooner Mikelangelo in a three-hour all-star extravaganza, kicking off at 5pm, Friday October 10.

Then on Saturday October 11 join Pierre Baroni for a journey through the golden age of black American music on Soulgroove '66 from 3pm. Pierre's guests are so special we can't even reveal who they are yet, so stay tuned!

Both events are free and open to the public so come down and join in the City of Darebin’s celebration of Melbourne’s musical community, with more than 150 events taking place over 11 days, across 15 venues in Westgarth, Northcote, Thornbury, Preston and Reservoir.

Friday’s broadcast will be hosted by Matt McFetridge – record collector, DJ and host of PBS’ Jungle Fever, Fridays, 7-8pm. A collector of all things vintage and kitsch (especially records) he spins rare and obscure R&B, rockabilly, exotica and 50s and 60s rock n’ roll records all on glorious busted up old 45s. So if you wanna dance the pig, flip your wig, shimmy shimmy shake or let your back bone break, then hit the floor with the disc jock that brings you more.

He’ll be joined by DJ Emma Peel – Melbourne’s first lady of Latin. She has been DJing across Australia and around the world for over 15 years, and since 2008 has helped Melbourne swing through its weekend with her weekly PBS show Switched On, Saturdays at 1pm. The show takes listeners on a vinyl safari back to the 60s and 70s to discover sounds from around the world. Think latin jazz, boogaloo, samba, bossa nova, soul jazz, and other rare delights.

Ken Eavel, host of PBS' Go For Broke, Tuesdays at 8pm, will bring the blues, R&B, country, rockabilly, garage, surf, punk and rock & roll to the mix. Ken takes listeners on a trip through the tributaries & streams, rivers & swamps, bayous & bays of the musical world.

Soulgroove ’66 is presented by Pierre Baroni every Saturday from 3pm to 5pm on PBS, but on Saturday October 11 he’ll be swinging it from the festival hub bar! Let’s hear what it’s all about from the man himself…

“I try to take the listener on a little chronological trip through the golden age of black American music. I keep it fairly raw and ‘down home’, from the rhythm and blues of the late 1950s to the funky soul of the early 1970s, all on 7” vinyl 45s, with the odd LP-only track thrown in.”

Join Emma Peel, Matt McFetridge, Ken Eavel and guests for a special all-star extended edition of Stone Love and Jungle Fever, Friday October 10 at 5pm, and Pierre Baroni for Soulgroove ’66, Saturday October 11, at 3pm.
Northcote Town Hall forecourt, 189 High St, Northcote.
