2019 Rebetiko Festival: The surge of the underground

Rebetiko2019.jpg

Saturday 23 March 2019

Rebetiko musical and cultural expression are linked to song and dance that spread among the urban working-class populations in Smyrna (Izmir) and Constantinople (Istanbul) around the turn of the 20th Century. It found its home in the ports of Athens and Thessaloniki after the expulsion of Greeks from Modern Turkey in the 1920s.

Direct from Greece, Rebetien showcases its authentic Rebetiko sound and will be supported by international and local Rebetiko artists.

Featuring:
Atsushi Tookaya (Japan)
Meyhane
George Doukas and the D Strings (NSW)
Polixeni
Melbourne Rebetiko Ensemble
Mandolins of Smyrne
Rebetiko Trio
Bouzouki Orchestra with Dean Georgalas
Alphington Grammar Rebetiko Band

Supported by The Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, Greek Festival of Sydney, Victorian Multicultural Commission & Neos Kosmos Media & Kape Communications.
