Filmonik Melbourne is putting on a James Joyce Kabaret turning scripts into short films, inspired by James Joyce. This free event, located at Library at The Dock on the promenade, runs over both Saturday and Sunday and it’s all about creating a welcoming space inspiring people to make great short films. The event is run by the Filmonik community, a group of passionate short film makers, part of the international Kino movement, urging film makers to do more with less!

There’s only two days left of the Emerging Writers Festival so make sure you visit to check out the remaining events on the program. To feel like you haven’t missed out on all the action, there will be a EWF closing party at Thousand Pound Bend in the city. It kicks off around 6 and even better, it’s free entry! The night which features Ladies of Leisure, describes itself as “a night of partying hard with farewell speeches, the voicing of dreams about our collective literary future, sexy dorks, DJ sets, drinks and a big ‘let’s change the world for the good with all our words’ hurrah.”

I’ve just stumbled upon this gem which opened up last week; it’s called Open House: Tromarama for kids at the NGV international. An immersive house has been built in the gallery, where furniture hangs from the ceiling; pink flamingos talks and garden gnomes have a chat with ya. The interiors of each room include participatory multimedia elements for young visitors to experience – there’s a tree stump in the courtyard that has a chat with you after recording your voice! Kids get all the cool stuff. It run every day from 10am to 5pm is a whopping zero dollars to get in!
