American Ari Hoenig, whose intense and creative approach to drumming has elevated him to the ranks of the industry’s finest, teams with acclaimed Australian saxophonist Jamie Oehlers in a double bill with self-taught, American piano prodigy Vijay Iyer. Jason Moran (USA), Scott Tinkler (AUS) and Simon Barker (AUS) come together for a world premiere performance, playing on a double bill with New York saxophonist Tim Berne’s new touring band, Los Totopos - a potent blend of complex melodic parts and virtuosic group playing. Rounding out Jazz Up Close over the working week is pioneer of Australian acid jazz, Albare; the Anthony Pateras-led Thymolphthalein (AUS/France), and international artists Jim Black and Aaron Goldberg uniting with the rising talents of the Australian jazz scene from Monash University in ‘Jazz Futures’.
