The conception of Wilson Magnusson Collings was initially inspired by the instrumentation and artistic expression of the Paul Motian (RIP) trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano. And, in following the yellow brick road, the congruence of artists that inspired them.

Julien Wilson, Stephen Magnusson, and Phil Collings bring their individual and collective stories to this unique setting, all of whom having had a myriad of musical experiences across their careers in Australia and abroad, and all having developed singularly original voices. In combination, they are presenting the form with playfulness, continuity, and respect.

The original idea by Phil Collings, Crackbell Records producer and recording artist, was to record the trio in a church to utilise the natural acoustics. A gig became available at the late great Bennett's Lane Jazz Club just before its final closure which was recorded by Crackbell Records and the album Tale of Two Birds was born.
