Melbourne musicians share their passion for inspiring change

MELBOURNE, TUESDAY 21 AUGUST, 2012 — Arts Centre Melbourne’s Big Notes 2012 sees some of Melbourne’s most cutting-edge musicians, including Kutcha Edwards, Mantra (aka Robert Tremlett) with the Massive Hip Hop Choir and The Sunshine Sisters together with host Candy Bowers, singing and talking about the inspiration behind their thought-provoking lyrics at Fairfax Studio at 7.30pm on Friday 7 September.
This musical performance and Q&A session, which has been presented at Arts Centre Melbourne since 2010, will explore how the musicians promote social, political and personal change through their songwriting. Seen by more than one thousand students since its inception, the show is now open to music lovers of all ages and young artists to enjoy the music and hear the big questions answered by these established artists.
The charismatic Candy Bowers will host Big Notes 2012 and after each performance converse with the artist about music and the change they’d like to see in world. Bowers, a writer, performer and hip hop artist in her own right, is currently touring three original hip hop theatre and comedy shows across the country.
Master storyteller and singer Kutcha Edwards will showcase his songwriting talents and discuss his passion for helping the young Indigenous community. As a member of the Stolen Generations, Edwards has used his painful experience in a positive way, by encouraging young people towards a path of self-belief and self-expression and to strengthen the storytelling bonds in his community.
Soul and funk outfit The PutBacks were recently chosen as the house band for the infamous Prince after party at the Hi Fi Bar. Robert Tremlett aka Mantra is one of Australia’s most talked about young Hip Hop lyricists, with a passion for helping disadvantaged youth. Mantra will collaborate with Australia’s first Hip Hop choir Massive, which combines original rap with lush harmonies and street choreography. The Sunshine Sisters will also perform their Australian roots influenced music, with four-part vocal harmonies promoting light and love through song.
