Dive in to the Yalinguth archives!

Yalinguth, the Builders Arms Hotel and Leaps and Bounds Music Festival present a night of yidaki, songs and stories at the historic and much-loved Builders Arms Hotel, Wednesday July 22. Tickets available here.

‘The Builders’ once known by some as the ‘Black Pub of Melbourne’ was a hub for the Aboriginal community from the 1930s-1980s. In this time many people came off the missions and found family and community in Fitzroy. They banded together to fight for their rights and gain control over their own affairs. In Gertrude Street there was a pub on every corner, providing important meeting places.

From the 50 interviews recorded for the Yalinguth app, Yalinguth has curated a new and intimate collection of stories about love, loss, tough times, and the strength of community spirit that grew in these meeting places. Sounds, stories and projections from Yalinguth will be woven together by Jason Tamiru playing yidaki and clapsticks.

Guests will hear audio stories from well-known Elders such as Uncle Archie Roach, Uncle Jack Charles and former Fitzroy publican Aunty Beryl Booth! Uncle Robbie Thorpe will share a yarn, followed by a music/spoken word set from Aunty Beryl’s granddaughter MpathSoul (Monica Jasmine Karo).

Upstairs at ‘The Builders’, 7.30pm Wednesday July 22. Tickets available here.

This is event is proudly supported by the City of Yarra and the Builders Arms Hotel.
