Music fundraiser for asylum seeker justice
Stop the cruelty and start the music. Now in its fourth year, These Machines Cut Razor Wire 2014 promises an uplifting night of music to raise much-needed funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Refugee Advocacy Network and the Refugee Action Collective.
Bands and artists joining the cause this year include Van Walker, Saint Jude, Oh Pep! Duo, Little Foot, Brooke Russell, Ben Smith Band, Berlin Postmark as well as Justin Bernasconi, Cat Canteri, Mandy Connell, Ruth Lindsey, Les Thomas and more.
Named in reference to Woody Guthrie's famous "This machine kills fascists" slogan, this event is about standing up to the mistreatment of refugees, sharing a positive musical experience and raising a sizeable amount of money to give practical help to asylum seekers.
"It seems the worse the major parties get in punishing innocent people, the more ordinary people are determined to make a positive difference", says organiser Les Thomas. "So we're hoping to make this event the biggest yet. Every ticket sold makes a real difference."
Master guitar maker Jack Spira has also donated a handcrafted acoustic guitar worth $3500 with a raffle to be drawn on the night. Says Jack Spira, "This machine was made in the hope it might do some good, and has been very fortunate to get the chance to raise some money for the great ASRC."
Tickets are on sale now for 7pm on Saturday, 22nd of March 2014 at the Bella Union, Trades Hall. All proceeds will go to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Refugee Advocacy Network and the Refugee Action Collective.
