PBS 106.7FM, in association with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF), is excited to announce Victorian jazz composer/performer Gian Slater as the winner of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission. This is an annual initiative promoting innovation and excellence in jazz composition.

PBS congratulates Gian who has been awarded $10,000 for the creation and presentation of her new work. Her composition will be broadcast on PBS and premiered at the 2015 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

“I am very honoured to be the 2015 recipient of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz. It is rare to receive support for the composition and presentation of new work and so I am very thankful to PBS for this opportunity. I am also very excited to begin working on this project with some of my favourite musicians and friends and look forward to sharing it with listeners at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival," Gian said.

The aim of the Commission is to provide support for composers at a pivotal point in their career, and to encourage creative flair and distinction in the jazz idiom. The PBS Young Elder of Jazz Commission is an initiative of PBS in association with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and is generously supported by Mark Newman.
