Hailing from the hot bed of Melbourne’s inner-north, Karate Boogaloo sit in a class of their own within the city’s soul/jazz scene; their uniquely suburban-Australian perspective of funk and soul brings a fresh, zany take on the genres – aided by a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Carn The Boogers, named for the vehement catch-cry that has developed within Karate Boogaloo’s Australian audience, captures KB’s unconventional cinematic, break-heavy funk.
Recorded live to tape in Karate Boogaloo’s studio space, a cramped attic above a factory in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, the record was entirely tracked and mixed by the band – a process integral to the band’s steadfast DIY work-ethic. The self-produced album marries gritty soul from the school of El Michels Affair with unorthodox arrangements and razor-sharp playing. Carn The Boogers collates heavy, minor key deep funk with rolling cinematic themes and left-field instrumental experiments.
Carn The Boogers was released on May 1, 2020 on independent Melbourne soul label College Of Knowledge Records, following the label’s most recent release of Surprise Chef’s All News Is Good News album in 2019.
