Fri 20 Jul 2012 to Sun 29 Jul 2012

For ten days in July and in over 30 sites, Gertrude Street in Fitzroy will be illuminated by the visions of talented projection artists for the Gertrude Street Projection Festival.

From July 20 – 29, windows, laneway walls, footpaths, shop interiors, tree-trunks, and whole buildings will be lit up with art inventions, created by award winning projection artists, community groups and individuals.

A project of the Gertrude Association, the Gertrude Street Projection Festival is in its fifth year and aims to connect and celebrate our diverse community and expose a large audience to this free outdoor street gallery.

Established projection artists whose work will be featured include Arika Waulu, Amanda Morgan, Olaf Meyer, Richie Cyngler, Russell Gray Goodman, Jarrod Factor, Nick Azidis, Yandell Walton, Lindsay Cox, Angela Barnett and Jacqui Mitelman.

A particular highlight of this year’s festival is the display of the sculptural work of the late Russell Gray Goodman. Tragically murdered outside a St Kilda flat in 1988 aged just 27, his brother Chris Goodman has spent the past four years restoring Daytona Dreamer and A Thirsty Child Doesn’t Read the Label to be exhibited for the first time since a retrospective of Russell’s art was held at Linden Gallery in 1990.

In 2012, the theme of Elements has inspired a variety of works including the animations of award winning political satirists, Too Busy To Be Beautiful, and Yandell Walton exhibits an environmental themed interactive projection installation.

In addition to a number of established guest artists taking part in this year’s Gertrude Street Projection Festival, other exciting projects include work from RMIT Public Art Students and Artful Dodgers Studio - one of the longest running community cultural development programs in Victoria.

Special events include Media Lab Projection Workshops being held at Seventh Gallery and a “Homage to Smith St” where the photographic portrait works of Jacqueline Mitelman and Rod McNicol both recent winners of the National Photographic Portrait prize will be projected.

Kym Ortenburg, co-founder of the not-for profit Gertrude Association said, “This year we've expanded to have projection as part of sculpture, choirs, dance and hidden away interactive work. We're very excited to be exhibiting an environmentally themed interactive work of Yandell Walton and we continue to be at the forefront of projection technology with the interactive work of Lindsay Cox, Richie Cyngler and Angela Barnett.”
