Please submit proposals for site specific moving image or still projection installations, that respond to buildings or sites along Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. The projections are outside without sound. Consider ambient light, the urban context of the street, potential obstacles like trees, traffic and tram lines and where the projector will be placed. Please read the ‘things to consider’ page.

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival is an annual free outdoor projection festival that began in 2008 with eight sites. In 2011 it had thirty sites with eight sites dedicated to site specific projections.

THINGS TO CONSIDER GERTRUDE STREET PROJECTION FESTIVAL JULY 2012

YOUR PROJECTION
Become familiar with the street at night then choose a projection site. Be as inventive as possible chose existing walls, buildings, trees or any architectural features of the buildings. Consider the ambience, history and feel of Gertrude St.

PROJECTION SIZE
Envisage the scale of your proposed projection. We are used to very large scale site specific pieces – they have great impact, but smaller pieces have been audience favourite as well.
Roughly figure out the size of a final image with this ratio: image width = 1/2 the distance of projector to surface. So for your image to be 2 meters wide your projector will need to be 4m from the projection surface.

COLOURS THAT WORK BEST
Because our eyes are tuned to green light, any colour with a lot of green or green light such the yellow or cyan colour Range works well. Blue and red only works well against black. Use black to make the features of your projection stand out. High contrast and brightly coloured graphics look good and most colours look good against a white background. Drawn line images are best in white.

PROJECTOR LOCATION
The projectors are located inside buildings opposite the site you want to project onto. Your projector will probably be located in a 2nd storey window or mounted up to a 3 m level, there is no other high level rigging. Power sources need to be available and also consider overshadowing of people viewing the work. You can propose High Definition building mapping projections, or High-Tech interactive installations but you should be experienced and self sufficient with these processes. Remember the proposal must be realistic, viable and safe. It is preferable but not essential that you have all /some of the projection equipment yourself. We can source and install projectors for those who do not have their own and provide some technical assistance.

It is essential that you test the piece yourself during the test week before the festival, that you assist with the bump in and out your own installation and that you monitor your projection each night of the festival. There are no sound facilities.

While there is no allocated funds for artists fees/ travel / production costs to produce the installations, we provide an amazing opportunity to have your work seen by up to 8,000 people, great streetscape and space, a 9 day fantastic event and free publicity.
