Tune in to Jazz On Saturday this week to hear The End performing their PBS Young Elder of Jazz winning composition 'Night and Day'.

Winner of the PBS Young Elder of Jazz commission, The End jazz ensemble performed Tim Willis’ winning composition at Bennetts Lane on June 1st for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Known for their startlingly original take on jazz-rock, this new work will see the quintet draw influence from the work of minimalist composers to create a compelling new sound. A study in human emotions, the suite’s five distinctive movements explore emotional transformation and renewal, with subtly interwoven themes acting as a showcase for both solo and group improvisation. Witness this talented young artist at a pivotal juncture in his career.

For the creation and presentation of his new work “Night and Day”, Willis was awarded $10,000. The aim of the Commission is provide support for composers at a pivotal point in their career, and to encourage creative flair and distinction in the jazz idiom . The performance will also be broadcast on Saturday 8th of June from 9am on PBS 106.7FM – on the program Jazz on Saturday. Hosted by PBS announcer Jim McLeod, this will be a chance to check out Melbourne’s new jazz sounds and hear from an ensemble featuring some of our finest players.
