PBS in association with the City of Yarra is proud to announce Access Airwaves, a new community initiative that engages local youth with the ins and outs of radio broadcasting. The program provides training to develop the skills involved to produce a radio show with music as the central focus.

The program kicks off in mid-August and will see approximately 20 young people from the surrounding housing estates, each undertaking a three week course run by popular PBS announcers at the PBS studios in Collingwood. Participants from a cross section of cultural backgrounds including East Timorese, Sudanese, Indigenous and Vietnamese will gain skills in radio voice and presentation, interviewing, technical skills, planning a program, plus they’ll also have the opportunity to develop a 30 minute demo of their show. The students will also receive a Certificate of completion and a pair of studio quality headphones as well as ongoing one-on-one mentoring for on-air broadcasting.

Access Airwaves aims to give attendees a taste of community broadcasting whilst serving to increase self confidence, networking, and encourage participation in a positive community environment. The course will enable recipients to gain transferable skills in various aspects of live and pre-recorded music presentation.
