Miss Destiny Self-Titled (PBS feature record)

As a constant on Melbourne stages for the past few years, Miss Destiny have had plenty of time to hone their proto-punk sound – distilled down to 10 tracks of swagger-filled rock and roll on their self-titled debut LP for Sydney’s RIP Society records. Sweaty, straight-ahead, and leather-clad, Miss Destiny deliver a potent message against domestic violence on standout track ‘Killers’; ‘The One’, the B-side of the band’s first 7” single (released on US label Hozac back in 2014) also making an appearance here. Unapologetic about both their influences and their politics, Miss Destiny have put rock’s old guard on notice.

The history of popular music is rich with little-known outsider types. For every copy of Frampton Comes Alive in every dollar bin the world over, a litany of DIY oddball characters’ privately recorded and self-released material also exists. The onerous task of collating these diamonds in the rough has been expertly executed by French selectors Julien Dechery and DJ Sundae on this essential compilation – worth the RRP for Karen Marks’ killer 1981 minimal synth-pop cut ‘Cold Café’ alone. The second release for Noise In My Head records’ reissue label Efficient Space, Sky Girl is must for any fan of outsider folk, the esoteric and the forgotten.
