by The Step Kids
Troubador is the sophomore album from the Connecticut trio The Stepkids, and by the sounds of things, they've been listening to all the right people. Having toured recently with Kimbra, Meyer Hawthorn and the Horrors, The Stepkids are now signed to Stones Throw records. This album has a pop sensibility that is finessed with so many brilliant production and compositional ideas it's hard not to gape a little at how integrated it all sounds. All three musicians have worked extensively as sidemen for a wide variety of artists (Guitarist/vocalist Jeff Gitelman was Alicia Keys' touring guitarist) and it all comes out in this glorious stylistic tapestry. New wave, jazz, neo soul and psychedelia all fuse across the album’s 10 songs, with angular vocal melodies borrowed from jazz, time signature shifts, unpredictable chord progressions and lush synth textures bolstering an invigorating set of compositions. Prepare to be excited!
