Equal parts Dinosaur Jr and Sleater‐Kinney, Screaming Females is the trio of Marissa Paternoster (guitar/vocals), Michael Abbate (bass) and Jarrett Dougherty (drums). Fifteen years on, they remain as hard working and viciously independent as they were when they began in 2005 and are still one of the most critically acclaimed underground punk bands to come out of the US.

In 2016, Screaming Females came to Australia for what was their debut tour down under. They marked the occasion by releasing an exclusive Australian tour edition of their sixth studio album Rose Mountain. They also made the time to drop in to PBS to record a ferocious live set in Studio 5.

Since that time, the band released another album, All At Once, in 2018. And in early November 2020, they re-released an old EP, titled Chalk Tape, available as a limited run of just 100 cassette copies which sold out immediately at one of their shows in 2013.

Recently, the band posted a short clip from a jam session on their Instagram page with the caption, ‘We’re still a band. Miss y’all.’ It is perhaps a reminder to their fans that despite the global pandemic and its implications on live music, musicians worldwide are still writing, rehearsing, and actively pursuing their art while they wait out the crisis.

From our end, we celebrate the music of Screaming Females by revisiting their Studio 5 Live session from 2016. Tune in to Garageland on December 8 to hear the entire set.

Studio 5 Live is proudly supported by our mates at Mountain Goat.
