Sanctuary Festival includes musical performance, visual art and other creative forms of expression by local female artists as well as a healing space, delicious food and beer provided by the Good Brew Company and is both a fundraiser for the Good Samaritan Inn Women’s Refuge as well as a celebration of women’s creativity and solidarity.

Along with the headline musical collaboration, other musicians performing include Kavisha Mazzella, Liz Stringer, Rachel by the Stream, Eliza Hull, Nervous Doll Dancing, Kattimoni (acoustic), Scarlett Cook, Melody Moon, Kathryn Pound, Kristen Perry, Katt Winduss, Taylor Project, and Zinnia Blue. ‘Most of us dream of a life full of fun and happiness, but there are some of us who can only dream of going through a day without fear of violence’

Festival organisers Rachel Samuel and Kate Tucker chose to call the event ‘Sanctuary Festival’ to show that Northside women support these less fortunate Northside women on their journey. They thought by hosting a day long family friendly fundraiser, in which all the local musicians, healers and volunteers are donating their time for the cause, it would be clear message to all women and the community about this often unspoken problem in our society.
‘Each time a woman leaves a violent situation she gains more and more confidence in herself, and moves closer to the life she deserves.

The Good Samaritan Inn, women’s refuge Darebin, offers short term crisis accommodation to women and their children who are escaping family violence or who find themselves homeless. The Inn tries to provide three basic things: skilled support, a nurturing environment, and a safe place for women and children to stay.

The Inn is supported by the tireless energy and dedication of countless volunteers and sponsors across Australia. Some performers have even begun volunteering at The Inn since the first festival in 2010. But the Inn still needs ongoing support to provide the most basic every day items for the many women and families who pass through their doors on their journey toward finding true sanctuary.
