For over 15 years The Pearly Shells have been an institution here in Melbourne. Led by bassist Steve Purcell, the ensemble is constantly adapting to its musical environment – from intimate trio settings, to big band RnB, and even a full swing orchestra. Back in 2007 The Pearly Shells came to PBS and squeezed themselves into Studio 5 for a killer set of blues, roots and swing.
With Melbourne’s live scene re-opening, The Pearly Shells are back where they should be – hitting the pubs and clubs of our city just as they’ve done for a decade and a half. On May 14 the full Pearly Shells Swing Orchestra hit the stage at Brunswick’s Jazzlab and to celebrate the gig we’re excited to return to 2007 when Melbourne was first discovering a group that would become one of our most revered roots ensembles.
