by Chris Abrahams
Memory Night marks the third solo album released by Chris Abrahams on iconic Australian experimental label Room 40. Throughout the four tracks of Memory Night we hear Abrahams’ ongoing exploration of texture derived from sources that are almost impossible to identify – with the exception of occasional passages of his trademark sustained piano. As with his two previous Room 40 releases, Memory Night utilizes an expanded sound palette to create subtle layers that sometimes gently inter-mingle, while at other times individual passages abruptly give way to new themes and instrumental timbres.
With Memory Night, Abrahams’ asks his audience to make a commitment to the act of listening. Even when we hear familiar sounds they are often cut up and reconstituted, creating both tension and ultimately gratification. Like the very best work from his regular band The Necks, the music of Memory Night works best when consumed whole – this is not the music of iPods and mix-tapes.
