by Horrorshow

At first glance the title of the new album by Sydney duo Horrorshow seems to smack of hubris but in fact it is about internal struggle, the mastery of oneself and striving to be the best you can be. Accordingly this fine hip-hop album flows like an internal monologue. The lyrically gifted MC Solo ranges across topics as diverse as indigenous affairs, poverty, justice and personal relationships. Creating an album that carries his own deeply personal reflections on these topics and allows the audience a privileged glimpse into Solo’s mind. On King Amongst Many he looks behind topical issues to reveal the human frailties that underlie them. In ‘Can’t Look Away’ the lyricist tries to understand the thoughts of a condemned man who is lead out of a courthouse on his way to prison. Through the eyes of Solo the prisoner’s own internal struggle is deftly revealed.

The beats on the album come courtesy of Adit who is the other half of the Horrorshow team. The production is subtle and the beats never overpower Solo’s lyrics but Adit carries off his task with finesse and is making a name as a fine Australian producer. Together Adit and Solo have made an album that presents and interesting new musical take on contemporary Australia.
