by Future of The Left
On first listen, Future Of The Left’s latest studio album, How To Stop Your Brain In An Accident is a very curious sounding album, it takes many listens to fully appreciate it’s subtlety and is one of their best releases.
The tracks ‘French Lessons’, ‘Something Happened’ and the closing track ‘Why Aren’t I Going To Hell’ are more contemplative storytelling songs, while the rest of the album is trademark Future Of The Left. The singer Falco is in full storytelling mode here, his vocals are as varied and clever as ever. The guitars are much more prevalent on this record, as compared to their last album, The Plot Against Common Sense. This album recalls their early aggression on tracks such as ‘Donny On The Decks’, which is a great and hysterical critique of DJ’s. Falco really has a go at the current music industry on ‘Singing On The Bonesaws’ and ‘How To Spot A Record Company’, his lyrics are very clever and reflect his frustration with the music industry in general.
It’s a sad reflection of today’s music industry, that the band required fans pledging funds through Pledge, to fund this album. One benefit though is that the band had complete control over their music and this is reflected by the music on this current record, which shows the band prepared to be even more experimental. As expected there are no normal song structures here, it’s simply Future Of The Left doing what they know best.
It’s highly recommended this album and is available locally through Remote Control Records. And we can only look forward to their appearance at The Corner Hotel on Thursday 2nd January.
