SOTA Next Matriarch

State of the Art this week welcomes Kimberley Moulton, co-curator of Next Matriarch, a group exhibition offering sovereign female voices a place to consider the past and future matriarchy.

Next Matriarch carries a conversation between First Nations female artists and artworks, from ancestral healing and the dystopia of modern society, to the language of pop culture and the Sovereign female body as a carrier of children, resilience and knowledge at the Koorie Heritage Trust, Saturday 2 June until Friday 13 July 2018.

Next Matriarch has been co-curated by Kimberley Moulton, Yorta Yorta Curator and Senior Curator South Eastern Aboriginal Collections, Museums Victoria and Liz Nowell, CEO ACE Open.

“This exhibition is about strength, sisterhood and the integral role that these artists have in contemporary art in Australia. The works in Next Matriarch speak to the Sovereign authority that female First Peoples have in community, healing and in activism. The artists share lived experiences grounded in their culture and community but also look forward and construct future imaginings of the Blak Matriarchal space. This exhibition is both an ode to sisterhood, those who have come before and a message for the future female,” said co-curator Kimberley Moulton.

Tune into The Breakfast Spread from 8am Wednesday June 13 to catch the interview and head to the Koorie Heritage Trust website for more information on the exhibition.
