PBS Day Tripper:

The PBS Day Tripper compilation features 14 tracks all recorded live in PBS’s Studio 5 and across its 14 songs this CD includes everything from intimate acoustic blues to a distorted, amplified string quartet. Given that in 2015 we’re asking listeners to ‘Get on Board’ it was also inevitable that there’d be a train song. In this case it comes from long-running local heroes The T-Bones.

This fine collection of exclusive recordings from PBS’ Studio 5 kicks off with The Livingstone Daisies , one of Crispi’s favourite Melbourne bands. Their infectious indie pop-rock is followed by the swaggering alt-country rock of Tracey McNeil & The GoodLife, and The T-Bones’ classic Big Train. Acoustic works from Mustered Courage, Nine Mile Creek segue into dirty US blues from Old Grey Mule and a solo piece from former Throwing Muse Kristin Hersh.

Bongeziwe Mabandla brings us the blues from Africa before Alárìíá kick it into some Afrobeat overdrive to get your feet moving. Proving that Melbourne is truly the epicentre for live music in Australia the compilation then features three killer tracks from bands who have put out essential albums over the last 12 months or so. Papa Chango’s Enter the Dragon is a big, brassy, bottom-end groove while Emma Donovan & The PutBacks remind us that all good music needs to have soul. Hammond trio Cookin’ on 3 Burners then give us Skeletor, one of the instrumental highlights of their exceptional 2014 release Blind Bet.

The PBS Day Tripper compilation finishes up with Sydney’s FourPlay String Quartet cranking up their amps to drag their violins and cellos kicking and screaming into the 21st century before Omelette round out the disc with some subtle contemporary electric jazz.

PBS Night Rider:

The PBS Night Rider compilation CD is a killer mix of some old favourites and a bunch of new stars who’ve plugged in and turned it up in our live performance studio, Studio 5. For those who perhaps like their music a little on the dark side, there’s plenty here to keep you satisfied. To kick things off however we start with a band that always set out to have fun. When 1200 Techniques chose to re-form last year one of the first places they performed was in Studio 5 at PBS for a set on Fresh Produce. These guys pretty much set the tone for some psych rock from Grand Rapids followed by legendary US guitarist Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds who set up to play live at PBS before they’d done any other shows in Melbourne.

Slowing things down for a moment the compilation then brings us two majestic, dark epics from Child and Fourteen Nights at Sea, two Melbourne bands renowned for their live shows. For a moment then the darkness turns to black as AK-11 head into overdrive for six minutes of brutal intensity.

One of the things that PBS has always done so well is to know our musical past while keeping an eye out for what’s coming next. Legendary UK punks The Vibrators have clearly lost none of their energy after all these years. Their track My Stalker is closely followed by a track called Power by young Melbourne band Power…they’ll tell you as much as they intro this song from Drive Live 2015.

History tells us that punk must inevitably be followed by post-punk. Primitive Calculators were right there when that happened and they were right here at PBS in 2015 as we celebrated live music in Melbourne and on the radio. Perhaps The Night Terrors and Black Cab are natural musical descendents of the Calculators and it makes complete sense that they’d appear on this CD. Our night ride finally slows down in the pre-dawn hours with an incredible, textural piece of improvisation from experimental collective Hyperborea…a time to catch your breath and consider the breadth of music on PBS.
