Saxophone and cello, and beyond!

The Sound Barrier for Sunday 4 March 2018

Sometimes the universe seems to just deliver ideas for themes for The Sound Barrier to me. Other times it's done by my email server.

Like this week, when Melbourne saxophonist and sound artist Rosalind Hall emailed me with news of hers and cellist Judith Hamann's album Gossamers, released late last year on Caduc, a phantasmic extra-terrestrial journey past the known realms of either instrument. It was recorded, according to the official version of the story, in a studio in Melbourne but I actually thibnk it was done somewhere in outer space, in a dimension where sounds vibrate and resonate in little bursts of the beyond.

It's great stuff and it inspired me to put together a show showcasing these two instruments, and some of the especially unusual work that has been written for each of them.

The show will begin and end beyond the heights and horizons of sound, first with this remarkable new work of Rosalind and Judith and last with Karlheinz Stockhausen's penultimate piece from his final cycle KLANG ('SOUND'), where the bubbling electronic soup of the cosmos is met by the reflections of a solo soprano saxophone in EDENTIA, Composed shortly before Stockhausen's death in 2007.

In between we'll hear music that takes each of these instruments to and beyond their extremes, in works by Brian Ferneyhough, Stefan Prins, and Iannis Xenakis.

I hope you can join me this Sunday night, 4 March, at 10 PM (AEDT) on PBS as I take you beyond the limits of saxophone and cello on The Sound Barrier. You can tune in at 106.7 on the Melbourne FM dial, or on PBS Digital, or you can listen live from anywhere in the world via the PBS app, or online. The show is also available to listen back to, here on the website, along with its full playlist, shortly after it has gone live to air.
