Show #228 - Live Music Special + Baby Blue!

Radio City : Playlist for Thursday 8 February 2018

Artist | Track/Song Name | Album Title | Label/Distributor | Comments

Opening Theme: Eilen Jewell | Radio City | Queen Of The Minor Key

1. Les McCann & Eddie Harris | Compared To What | Swiss Movement
- This version was recorded at the 1969 Montreaux Jazz Festival and was a surprise hit when released as a single during that year.
2. The Buddy Rich Big Band | The Beat Goes On | Big Swing Face
- This cover of a Sonny & Cher song features Buddy's then-12 year old daughter on vocals and was released on this 1967 album.
3. The Sugarcanes | Never Trust A Girl In Love | PBS FM - The Sounds Of Studio 5 Live 2016: Daytime Dip
- Taken from their 2016 Studio 5 Live session and featured on that year's radio festival cd. They've got a new single due in March and their 2nd album is due in May.

4. La Bastard | Between You And Me | PBS Studio 5 Live Session
- This was from their session recorded on Radio City last July.
5. Wendy Saddington & The Copperwine | Backlash Blues | Live
- Wendy Saddington was a wonderful blues and rock vocalist who sadly only recorded the one album, released in 1971.
6. Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs | Momma | Live At Sunbury
- I've been wanting to play this on Radio City for a while. It just rocks so hard! It was recorded a few times but this is probably the most famous version, recorded in 1972.

7. Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band | Upon The My-O-My | The Old Grey Whistle Test Live
- Originally released on the Unconditionally Guaranteed version but this version, recorded on the legendary BBC show in 1974 is arguably superior.
8. Lou Reed | White Light/White Heat | Rock N Roll Animal
- This is a terrific live album of Lou's, released in 1974 and this is a very rockin' version of a classic Velvet underground tune.
9. Talking Heads | Thank You For Sending Me An Angel | Stop Making Sense
- Any excuse to play a tune off one of absolutely favourite live albums of all time!
10. Baby Blue | Fire And Ice | Do What You Like
- This is the only non-live tune on the show today but it's a ripper. Baby Blue are going to be launching this single on Feb 15th @ The Gasometer Hotel with support from Michael Beach, Bitch Diesel & DJ Hollie Joyce.

Interview with Rhea Caldwell from Baby Blue

11. Rhea Caldwell | I Like You | Live In Studio

12. Air [Feat. Gordon Tracks] | Playground Love | The Virgin Suicides - 15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
- This version was recorded live on KCRW Radio in Jan, 2000.
13. Bjork | One Day | Debut Live
- Most of this album is taken from a MTV Unplugged show recorded in 1994 and is one of my favourite Bjork recordings.
14. Dirty Three | Hope | Live! At Meredith
- This album was recorded at a very famous Meredith festival in 2004 when storms added to the performance.

15. Neil Young | Time Fades Away | Time Fades Away
- Although not overly liked by Neil and not released on cd until last year, this 1973 live album of previously unreleased songs is one of my favourite albums of his.
16. Fred Neil | The Dolphins | Other Side Of This Life
- Fred is a very under-rated artist but his baritone voice is amazing. Tim Buckley's version is probably better known but this is a beautiful recording of one of Fred's best songs.
17. Rhiannon Giddens & Dirk Powell | She's Got You | PBS Studio 5 Live Session
- This amazing version of a Patsy Cline song was recorded by Rhiannon & Dirk at PBS when they were touring Australia last April.

18. Johnny Cash | Big River | Bootleg Vol. III: Live Around The World
- This version was recorded live at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival with an introduction by Pete Seeger.
19. The Wilson Pickers | Come Back To My Love | Live!
- This is the only new live song on today's show with this album being released at the end of January. This album was recorded live at Bluesfest last year.
20. Gillian Welch | The Way It Will Be | The Bridge School Concerts: 25th Anniversary Edition
- A gorgeous version of this wonderful song, recorded at the 2006 Bridge School concert and released on this compilation in 2011.

Closing Theme: Ashley Davies | To Carpentaria - Into The Unknown | The Expedition Burke & Wills
