Garageland with Ruby Soho Friday morning 2-6am (Once a fortnight)
Garageland began in November 09. The four hour, fortnightly insomnia shift explores a diverse range of punk and rock and roll genres.
From post punk, garage, new wave punk, grunge, stoner rock, to Americana and country there is something for everyone. The shows host Ruby says “the show has no real boundaries, the only rule I’ve made for myself is to play great tunes.”
The four hours of Garageland takes you on a journey through the best of the last 50 years of punk and rock music. One minute you might be listening to Rocky Erickson, the next it could be Flipper, Brant Bjork, The Adverts or Kris Kristofferson. As Melbourne is one of the world’s finest rock and roll cities Garageland also dedicates a good portion of its time to playing local talent and includes a weekly gig guide.
Guest presenters appear occasionally on Garageland to give a fresh and diverse perspective on the music played. The guest presenters are usually members of local bands or working within the Melbourne music industry and always have a superb knowledge about a specific genre.
The shows name was derived from The Clash song “Garageland”. "Garageland" was written by Joe Strummer in a response to Charles Shaar Murray's damning review of one of the band's early concerts, "The Clash are the kind of garage band who should be returned to the garage immediately, preferably with the engine running". Perhaps some bands were best kept in the garage? Narh. Every band deserves the right to explore there spiritual genius in public even if they can only play three chords. So that one day the songs could be played on Garageland.
