The Opening
Welcome to The Opening, an hour of serious chat and opinionated blather on the arts. The show, produced and presented by Fiona Gruber, covers everything to do with the people and events that entertain us and make us think
It’s a show where the notorious and famous rub shoulders with the currently unknown, where a show by the Melbourne Theatre Company is held up for scrutiny beside one from Black Lung or Red Stitch and where some of the finest visual artists achieve the very hard task of talking pictures on radio. You’ll hear writers too, singers and even the odd sword swallower.
Every week we gather up some of the most interesting people on the planet and bring them to you via a small overheated studio in Collingwood Victoria. Serious and frivolous in turns, the show includes reviews, highlights of the week and frequent live music. We also look at important themes such as censorship and arts funding, or delve behind the scenes for a chat with the people who often stay in the background, from sound effects specialists, and set designers to life models, and publishers.
The Opening also likes to reward generosity with generosity; we give away great tickets almost every week, to some of the best theatre, cabaret or cinema in town, so if you're a PBS member you're in line for some great nights out. If you're not a member, it's yet another reason to sign up.
Tune in every Tuesday between 7 and 8 pm every week, and check this page for schedules of who's on.
The Opening has a highly accomplished and dedicated team of reviewers and occasional stand-in presenters including Mark Williams (theatre and stand-in), Stephanie Glickman (dance, cabaret and stand-in), Chris Povey (film and graphic arts) and Margaret Fried (books).
Although we can only feature a fraction of the great work out in artsland, we really like hearing about new work, so do contact us on the address below. If you've any questions or would like to discuss something you heard on the show, you can also send an email to theopeningonpbs@pacific.net.au
