Trans Am – Sex Change (Thrill Jockey Records, 2007)

Take one band. Send them to different corners of the world for a while. Then have them reconvene, not in their American homeland, but in New Zealand, with some borrowed instruments and limited studio time. What are you likely to get? Well, if the band in question is Trans Am, then Sex Change is the album you are likely to get.The 80s cheese-synth, powerful drumming, flawless production, their love of arpeggios, the kraut-math-funk-disco-whatever-rock. They don't try and cover new ground, they just execute their unique blend of styles in a really endearing manner. It could be that because I already had a sense of how the album was made, I allowed that to influence how it sounded to me, but it really does sound like three old bandmates getting together, years later, and having a jam. A jam that effortlessly resulted in a great record. And whilst I think this is a great record, it certainly isn't a career-defining one, nor is it going to change the world or the way we think about music. What it is going to do is provide Trans Am fans with a much-needed fix of new material and newcomers with a well-rounded introduction to the band.
