The Breakdown

Every Friday afternoon from 3 - 5pm The Breakdown takes you on journey through funk, soul and groove, with a little hip-hop thrown in for good measure . From James Brown's first guttural cries and the crack of 'Pretty' Purdies snare to the throbbing urgency of the Breakestra and the soulful tones of Sharon Jones, The Breakdown will get you dancing around the kitchen, lounge, car, office or wherever you are listening from. Hosted by noted local funk collectors DJ's Manchild and Mu-gen and with regular featues and interviews spotlighting artists, labels and record collectors/DJ's, no stone is left unturned in bringing you the heaviest, rarest and funkiest tunes.

RECENT GUESTS TO THE BREAKDOWN...

June 2006 - DJ James De La Cruz formerly of The Avalanches but always a man capable of rocking the hell out of any dance floor you give him, visited The Breakdown and told us what's what.  In town to play a gig that night at EuroTrash bar with his bro, the ever fresh Jerome, he showcased a little of his finest vinyl - brazilian, baile funk, hip-hop and the theme from Home And Away by Vybz Cartel (no shit!).  Catch the man if ya can

May 2006 - Open Souls.  I'll be damned if these guys aren't one of the best bands going around at the moment.  Not that much I can say just get the new album 'Kalidescope' and the 45, seriously one of the best things I have heard in ages.  Just get the vinyl out guys! www.opensouls.co.nz

Seriously - these guys are killing it!

May 2006 - Blackgrass aka Mex aka The Mexican aka etc.. The man with a million names and a million records dropped in and had a chat.  UK producer and DJ was in town to playing with Prefuse 73 et al down at the Prince as well as a little holiday action.  Got a new record soon so ears to the ground!  www.black-grass.com

April 2006 - Danielsan of Koolism swung in before sound check at The Invada showcase at The Espy and played a few records for the people.  Catch the new Koolism album if you haven't already, fool!  www.koolism.com

March 2006 - Fort Knox Five, those Washington japesters, in town to promote their new album and tear a few Melbourne dance floors a new one which they promptly did.  www.fortknoxrecordings.com

February 2006 - DJ Z-Trip, chief party-rocker himself granted us an interview before his set at Good Vibrations Festival.  Had a few interesting things to say about Aussie hip-hop and the sort of records he has been digging for recently... www.djztrip.com

January 2006 - On their recent tour Chief Excel of Blackalicious came in and dropped a little science on the people by way of a DJ set and interview.  However not content with the outcome of his set he contacted us asking that we not play it and wait for him to send us a brand-spanking, Breakdown-exclusive mix!!! And I'll be damned if it won't be a fine, fine thing kids.  Check out their new one 'The Craft', which is anything but cheese... http://www.blackalicious.com/

January 2006 - Ivan and Jake of Cookin' On 3 Burners came in for an interview and.  Check out their newbies -  7" 'Mango Skin/Gravel Rash' on Freestyle Records and 12" 'The Cressy St Breakdown' on Knowfoowl.  Nice one lads...
