The Art of BLEEP!

Welcome to The Art of BLEEP!, broadcasting Monday mornings from midnight till 2am with Evan.

Although I enjoy practically all forms of music, I have always had a love of electronic music. I can remember around 1974 hearing Kraftwerk’s Autobahn on the radio when I was about 8 or 9 and even at that young age thinking it was unlike anything I had heard before. As a result my schoolbooks were soon adorned with pictures of Volkswagens and the words "Autobarn" and "Craftwork". I was also introduced to electronic music listening to many "MOOG plays..." records that my parents subjected me to. It wasn’t until I bought my first record, Replicas by Tubeway Army (Gary Numan’s first band), that I discovered music I could identify with - even if most of my KISS loving school friends coundn’t!!

Although I still love the retro days, I like to dabble in all aspects of the electronic palate and that’s what I try to do on The Art of BLEEP!. Expect to hear old, new, nasty, serene, ambient, dark, noisy, poppy, avant, experimental, bent, trippy, chilled, obscure, eccentric, offbeat, psychotic, outsider, hidden, chaotic or just plain weird electronic or electro-acoustic sounds.

Some of the artists you’re likely to hear:
The Art of noise, Squarepusher, The Residents, Severed Heads, Cornelius, Liabach, John Foxx, Amon Tobin, Messer Chups, Tomita, Music vs Physics, Test Dept, YMO, OMD, This Mortal Coil, Fennesz, Rupert Hine, Tipsy, Murcof, Mr Bungle, The Human League, Holger Hiller, Future Sound of London, clouDEAD, Pierre Henry, Wendy Carlos, Laurie Anderson, Dj Shadow, Thomas Dolby, Fear Factory,  Stockhausen, Ultravox, Throbbing Gristle, Scanner, Luke Vibert, SPK, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Psychic TV, Bill Nelson, Bill Laswell, Jean Jacques Perrey, Vangelis, Brian Eno, Plaid, Boom Bip, Einsturzende Neubauten, John Cage, Ennio Morreconi, Felix Kubin, Raymond Scott, People Like Us, Bisk and many many more…

Another keen interest of mine is Australian electronic Music, especially local and independent/unrepresented artists. So if you dabble in electronic sounds and think that your efforts are too obscure and offbeat to get any radio support, chances are The Art of BLEEP! is just what you’re looking for.

So tune in, relax and be prepared to experience the most diverse sampling of electronic heaven (or hell) in Melbourne - The Art of BLEEP!

BLEEPISODE 48, THE BEST OF OZ - 20/07/2009
No. Song Name Artist Label Distributor Album & Comments
1 Spines/Pockets/Golden Lightbox Biko unreleased One of the best offerings I've heard for a long time, this Melbourne artist has not yet released any material, but there are a number of tracks to hear on his MySpace site www.myspace.com/musicbybiko . Such a rich tapestry of sound, warm, sublime, intense, do yourself a favor and stick BIKO in your MySpace favorites list today!
2 Worrytrain/Cruising Zac Keiller ind "Seawind". Again, a winner of an album, although a departure to the usual soundscape approach to Zac's music. Many tracks contain a full band sound, but still the sublime textures of Zac's guitar expertise is evident.
3 12 Feet in Cheltenham/Hammer/Swans The Rational Academy Something Good "Swans". An interesting blend of indie pop and trippy electro production. Produced and Arranged by Room 40 record label head Lawrence English.
4 Lucky land of Skin/Guts Brain Children Stained Circles Shock A new project that is the creation of members from the bands Eddy Current Suppression Ring (Punk rock), Agents of Abhorrence (Grindcore) and Cut Sick (Thrash-punk), producing disco-tinged pop! The track "Guts" is definately Kraut-rock inspired.
5 Creature Orisha Aikansha Music Vitamin "Falling Open". An instrumental track from their latest album.
6 Prevail Ninja Gaijin Demus "Demus Compiled". A fantastic compilation of the best dark electronic Melbourne has to offer. Thanks to Liz from the band Harpy for the disc.
7 Perplex People Frank Riggio Omelette "Noise Thinking". This has been one of my favorite albums this year, and to top it off, you can get it as a FREE download from the Omelette website. You can't ask for better than that!
8 Time and Distance Telefonica New Weird Australia is a new free music series - a not-for-profit initiative designed to promote new, eclectic and experimental Australian music. NWA’s principal vehicle is a free compilation series, available to download via http://www.newweirdaustralia.com every two months.
9 On the other hand, this Carbon-fibre is (Inflammable) Pimmon from the New Weird Australia promo: Geography dictates that, to some, Australia may forever remain as the Romans once saw it, as the “unknown land of the south”. However as technology conquers territory, distance becomes increasingly insignificant – a fact that is clearly illustrated on the first volume of New Weird Australia. In borrowing (and expanding) ‘new, weird’ terminology, NWA hopes to shrink the notion of distance between innovative Australian artists and their international compatriots; between the dot points on the vast map of our own land and between definitions of genre, taste or style.
10 Imagine:Test:Conclude:Imagine Autonomous ind "Tell us we can't Fly and we'll still jump from buildings". Another superb offering from Melbourne, with the best Ep title I've heard for a long while! www.myspace.com/autonomousisloud
11 The Crane Field Steven Heath ind "The Crane Field Ep" A curious little CD of quirky slacker-pop which is contained in a package consisting of a brown paper bag with beautiful sceen printed images of a Melbourne skyline. www.stevenheath.net www.myspace.com/stevenheathmusic
12 Wasteland 3 of Millions Space Dairy "Immediate". Sydney based improv trio using piano, keyboards, effects, electric and acoustic basses, electronics, percussion, both kit and junk!
13 Goodmorning Mirachet "Polyester Skies". I left the first CD at home, so those that requested tracks from CD 1 will have to make do with this track from CD 2! Maybe some more next week!
